You've probably noticed people typing full questions into ChatGPT instead of Google lately. That shift is called Answer Engine Optimization, or AEO -- setting up your website so AI tools can find your business, understand what you do, and actually recommend you.
Or maybe you've asked your phone something and gotten a spoken answer instead of a list of links. Same thing happening there, too. Either way, a new kind of search is running alongside traditional Google search, with its own rules for who gets mentioned.
What's the difference between SEO and AEO?
Traditional SEO (search engine optimization) gets your website to rank in a list of blue links on Google. AEO is about getting your business mentioned directly inside an AI-generated answer -- on Google's AI Overviews (the summary Google now shows above regular search results), in ChatGPT, on Perplexity, wherever people are asking.
Same goal, different game. With SEO, you're competing to be link #1. With AEO, you're competing to be the fact the AI pulls into its answer, whether you're ranked #1 or #9. AEO doesn't replace SEO -- it sits on top of it, using a lot of the same groundwork (fast pages, clean structure, real content) plus a few extra habits AI tools respond to specifically.
Why this matters more than it did a year ago
This isn't a niche trend anymore. Google's AI Overviews now reach about 2 billion people a month, up from 1.5 billion in May 2025, and they were showing up on roughly 18% of commercial searches by late 2025 -- more than double where that number sat earlier that year. ChatGPT crossed 1 billion monthly active users this past May and is now the 5th most-visited website in the world.
Here's the part that should really get your attention: over half of Google searches in the U.S. now end without anyone clicking a link at all. People ask, they get an answer, they move on. If your business isn't part of that answer, you're invisible for that search -- even if you'd normally rank well.
There's good news buried in there too. Roughly 40% of the sources AI Overviews cite aren't in the traditional top 10 results. Being #1 on Google isn't a requirement to get picked up by AI. Being clear, specific, and well-organized matters more than raw ranking.
How AI tools decide what to cite
AI answer engines are essentially reading your website and trying to lift out a clean, trustworthy fact. That means they favor a few specific things.
- A direct answer near the top of the page, not buried under three paragraphs of introduction.
- Content organized with real headers and short sections, not one giant wall of text.
- Consistent information about your business -- name, address, phone, services -- that matches everywhere it appears online, not just on your site.
- Pages that answer actual questions people ask, phrased the way people talk, not the way a keyword tool spits out.
- Structured data (schema markup), a small block of code that explicitly labels what's on a page -- your services, your FAQ answers, your business details -- so an AI tool doesn't have to guess.
This is the same underlying discipline good technical SEO has always rewarded, which is why our technical SEO and local visibility work already builds most of this in from the start.
Common AEO mistakes small businesses make
Most small business sites aren't losing this game on purpose -- they were simply built before any of this mattered. A few patterns we see constantly:
- A homepage that opens with a tagline or slogan instead of a plain sentence saying what the business does and who it serves.
- No FAQ page at all, or one with generic, made-up-sounding questions instead of the ones customers actually ask.
- A business name, address, or phone number that's slightly different on the website footer than on the Google Business Profile.
- Zero structured data anywhere on the site, leaving AI tools to guess at basic facts.
None of these require a rebuild to fix. They're editing problems, not engineering problems.
Three things you can try this week
- Rewrite your homepage's opening lines. Put the plain answer to "what does this business do and for whom" in the first two sentences. Skip the clever intro.
- Build or update one FAQ section. Pull 5-8 real questions your customers actually ask you -- on the phone, over email, in person -- and answer each one in 2-3 tight sentences. This is one of the highest-value moves for AEO, and it's something you can do without touching any code.
- Check your NAP consistency (that's Name, Address, and Phone number -- the basic facts about your business). Look up your business on Google, Yelp, and your own website footer. If your name, address, or phone number don't match exactly across all three, fix it. AI tools use consistency as a trust signal.
How to tell if it's working
AEO is harder to measure than a Google ranking, but not impossible. Ask ChatGPT or Google's AI Overview a question a customer might ask -- "best [your service] in Irvine," for example -- every few weeks and note whether you show up. If you start appearing where you didn't before, that's a real signal. Some analytics tools are also starting to break out referral traffic that comes specifically from AI platforms, which is worth checking if you already track your site's traffic.
A slow, cluttered site works against all of this too -- AI tools have an easier time reading and trusting a page that loads cleanly. We go into that side of things in Website Speed 101.
Frequently asked questions
What is Answer Engine Optimization (AEO)?
Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) is the practice of setting up a website so AI tools like ChatGPT, Google's AI Overviews, and Perplexity can find a business, understand what it does, and recommend it directly inside an AI-generated answer, not just rank it in a list of links.
What's the difference between SEO and AEO?
Traditional SEO gets a website to rank in a list of links on Google. AEO is about getting a business mentioned directly inside an AI-generated answer. With SEO you compete to be link #1; with AEO you compete to be the fact an AI pulls into its answer, whether you're ranked #1 or #9.
How do I improve my AEO?
Three starting points: put a direct answer near the top of your key pages, build an FAQ section answering real customer questions in plain language, and make sure your business name, address, and phone number match exactly everywhere they appear online.
Does AEO replace SEO?
No. AEO builds on top of traditional SEO rather than replacing it. Search engines and AI answer engines both reward clear, well-organized, technically sound websites -- AEO just adds a few extra practices on top, like structured data and FAQ-formatted content.
Do I need structured data (schema markup) for AEO?
It helps significantly. Structured data is a small block of code added to a page that explicitly labels information for search engines and AI -- your business name, services, FAQ answers, and more -- so they don't have to guess.
If Irvine and Orange County businesses want a head start here, this is exactly the kind of thing a quick technical check can catch -- the kind of gaps that are invisible until someone points them out. GIT Technology offers a free website speed and visibility check that looks at this alongside your site's performance. No pressure, just a clear picture of where you stand.
AEO isn't replacing SEO. It's sitting on top of it. The businesses that show up in AI answers over the next year are going to be the ones that started organizing their content this way now, not the ones scrambling to catch up later.
